Doug, this is definitely possible.  However, it's improbable.  Following the security community the overwhelming trend is to compromise a system surreptitiously and maintain control of it in the same fashion.  A Denial Of Service attack that renders the computer unusable until reboot is certainly serious, but it doesn't fit with the current mold of quietly compromise to gain and maintain control.
