There is an official GigE cross over wiring, so that technique could probably be applied to GigE too. I can't remember where exactly I got the wiring for it, however I converted an RJ45 inline adaptor (i.e., female/female) to use it, and had no trouble bringing up 10, 100 and 1000 speeds across it, without any changes to the settings of the NIC interfaces.
