I don't know how much current the device requires, but I've lived
awful troubleshooting situation where customers had USB-powered
ethernet switches, but their computers weren't providing enough juice.

The switch was kinda working, lights lit and even some packets going
through, but performance was terrible, and what a pain to troubleshoot
remotely!

I would go with Gert's solution ;)
